Role of the Bank of Albania in issuing the national currency

The Bank of Albania issues and puts into circulation the national banknotes and coins that are legal tender, as well as, banknotes and coins for numismatics purposes.

In addition, the Bank of Albania is responsible for the design, size, style and other features of Albanian banknotes and coins that are legal tender. 

The term "Legal tender currency" refers to banknotes and coins, which may be used for the payment of a debt and that a creditor must, by law, accept them, with no restriction, at their nominal value.
 

The Bank of Albania compiles the plan for issuing national banknotes and coins, to meet the currency demand of the Albanian economy. The Bank of Albania formulates the withdrawal policy of old banknotes and coins from circulation and their exchange with new issues.
