BoA organises the Fourth Conference of the Museum of the Bank of Albania: “The Medieval, the forerunner of a well-organized monetary system”

On 8 February 2023, the Bank of Albania organised the Fourth Conference of the Museum of the Bank of Albania on: “The Medieval, the forerunner of a well-organized monetary system”.

The Conference brought together representatives from important research institutions, like the Academy of Sciences of Albania, the Institute of Archaeology and History, professors at the University of Tirana, as well as museum staff, experts, and researchers in the field of museology and education, to present and discuss their research findings or experiences in this field.

The proceedings of the Fourth Conference of the Museum of the Bank of Albania were opened by the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Mr Gent Sejko, the Minister of Culture, Ms Elva Margariti, and the President of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, Mr Skënder Gjinushi.

In his speech, the Governor welcomed participants in this event, which takes place, after two years of global pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. 

Mr Sejko highlighted that this Conference is one of the most prominent events of the Museum, as it helps to enrich and further the study of the exposed collections, and serves as a platform for experts to discuss and share their research findings.

He added that as suggested by its title "The Medieval, the forerunner of a well-organized monetary system”, participants will share their perspective on the foundation and functioning of monetary systems of a state organisation, their currencies, and the nature of financial systems.  “Looking back at the history, it is crucial that we may find answers on issues we are concerned nowadays, like price stability and financial stability, more visibly expressed in the stability of the currency and its role related to the confidence in the financial system.” - emphasised Governor Sejko.

The Minister of Culture, Ms Elva Margarity, in her greeting speech, praised the Bank of Albania's educational role through its Money Museum. “The Museum of the Bank of Albania is one of the most interesting museums in Albania, which narrates a special line in the history of Albanians and our ancestors, the one of the relation they used to have with money” - said the Minister.

Ms Margariti added that on the other hand, we realise through numismatic, many other elements related not only with the economic power “ signed “ via the images of distinguished kings and princes of that times, also with the social life across these territories, the territorial expansion, up to the symbolic and aesthetic of their issue. Therefore, collaboration with other institutions, particularly in the field of education of the new generation, as from a coin to learn many pages of history.

The President of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, Mr Skënder Gjinushi in his remarks thanked Governor Sejko for the invitation in this Conference and commented the importance of this collaboration in the research and academic framework of both institutions.  He pointed out that the study of the currency is the key to discover and assess the history of a country and the selection of this topic dedicated to the Middle Ages, will further shed light on the study of this period in Albanian through numismatic.
