Automated authentication devices

Financial institutions may recirculate the Albanian banknotes only if these banknotes are duly checked for authenticity and fitness.

The authenticity and fitness checks of the banknotes to be recirculated shall be carried out:

by a type of banknote handling machine successfully tested by the Bank of Albania; or
by a trained staff member.

Banknotes that have successfully passed machine tests can be recirculated via automated teller machines (ATM) or other customer-operated machines.

Banknotes that have been tested by trained staff can only be distributed over the counter in financial institutions.

The Bank of Albania regularly tests the banknote handling machines and shall publish the results on its website.
