This publication is a compilation of presentations to the Fourth Conference of the Museum of the Bank of Albania on "The Middle Ages, a forerunner of a well-organized monetary system”, which took place on 3 February 2023.

The Bank of Albania organised on 9 November 2017 in cooperation with the South East European Studies at Oxford, the annual conference: "Banking developments and financial market infrastructure. The role of structure, size and market infrastructure in risk mitigation and financial intermediation".

The book contains papers held at the Conference on "Money and banking in Albania, from antiquity to modern times". This was the first conference organized by the Museum of the Bank of Albania, which brought together historians, academics, numismatists, archaeologists and researchers of monetary and economic history, to present and discuss the findings of their studies in the field of production and monetary circulation, economic history and banking development in our country, from antiquity to modern times.

The book represents the proceedings of the conference co-hosted by the Bank of Albania and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in Tirana on May 4-5, 2017. The conference was organized with the financial support of Switzerland.

The purpose of this special workshop book is to make available to the wider public the proceedings of the 4th SEE Economic Research Workshop. This book contains a collection of papers that place special emphasis on three important topics to central banking in transition and SEE small/open economies: lessons drawn from the global crises and its effects on SEE economies; internal and external imbalances’ adjustments – the need for new efforts with structural reforms to support sustainable growth, and; new anchors for economic policy.

The book you are holding in your hands contains a series of presentations made by distinguished national and international experts in the 7th Annual Conference of the Bank of Albania titled "Monetary Policy Strategies for Small Economies", held in Tirana on 6-7 December 2007.

This book exposes the discussion papers that were presented in the Round Table 2 'Inflation Targeting' which took place in December 7-8, 2006 in Tirana and follows from the conclusions of the Open Forum 'Preconditions for Inflation Targeting in Albania' of the year before.

The Bank of Albania hosted from 30 to 31 October 2006, its Sixth Annual Conference titled "Regional financial markets and financial stability - A concept between national sovereignty and globalization".

Inflation forecasting is an important condition even for the monetary policy transparency, which helps in improving the effectiveness of transmission mechanism and increasing the accountability of an independent central bank.

The 4th Conference of the Bank of Albania provided brainstorming on how to reduce the size of the informal economy in Albania, the reduction of the balance of payments deficits, the efficiency of the public sector on the phase of our transition economy and the efficiency of the monetary policy in particular, in order to achieve a macroeconomic and financial stability.

Albania is leaving behind the 12th year of transition. Like many other institutions, Bank of Albania, having its numerous responsibilities, has been an active witness and actor of the difficult process of economic, political and social transformation of the country, and so being aware of the achievements and failures of this process.
