Foreign exchange reserve

The Bank of Albania keeps and administers the foreign exchange reserves of the Republic of Albania. The foreign exchange reserve of the Republic of Albania are assets held in a foreign currency that are or will be placed under the administration of the Bank of Albania, based on the respective signed agreements for this purpose.

Foreign exchange reserve serves to:

fulfil the needs of the government for currency to pay the external debt;
support international trade by fulfilling the need for currency that arises from importers;
allow the Bank of Albania to intervene in the market, to prevent and buffer strong exchange rate volatility.
