Global Money Week, 2017

On March 27, 2017, at the premises of the Bank of Albania, Money Week (MW) was launched, as a global celebration of money, which is aimed at raising awareness of the younger generation to be responsible and financially capable future citizens. 
Bank of Albania participated for the fourth time in this celebration, and in cooperation with the Albanian Association of Banks, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA), Junior Achievement (JA) and the National Youth Service (RAS), organized educational and awareness activities including directly around 2,200 children and young people.  Below is an overview of the Money Week activities organized in Albania in 27 March- April 2, 2017, such as: lectures, school and TV competitions, visits to the Museum of the Bank of Albania and commercial banks, theatrical play as well as an educational exhibition with children's paintings. 

The opening ceremony of Money Week took place at the premises of the Museum of the Bank of Albania. The ceremony was attended by high level representatives of financial institutions and media as well as by many young people from elementary schools, high schools and universities in Tirana.  In their greeting speeches, the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Minister of Education and Sports and Chairman of the Albanian Association of Banks, emphasized among other things, Money Week’s mission, which is to raise awareness of the new generation to be responsible and financially capable future citizens.  Moreover, during this event, winners of our three Facebook competitions launched a month ago on "Facebook" by BoA and the AAB were announced. The contests included the following: 

 

Elementary school pupils (grades I-III) were invited to create simple drawings on their concepts about money and saving.  This competition was attended by over 500 pupils from about 35 elementary schools, of which, 10 winners were selected.  All drawings were published on our Facebook page and the ones with the highest number of likes and with the highest score from the Jury, whose members were representatives from Bank of Albania, Ministry of Education and Sports, First Investment Bank and Albanian Association of Banks were selected as winners. The winning drawings were exhibited at the Museum, where all winners received symbolic gifts and children deposits (5 listed as first winning drawings - 10,000 lekë, 5 listed as second winning drawings - 5000 ALL).

 

High school students in Tirana were invited to compete with videos of their own or in groups, on the theme "Save for bad days!  Save for better days!".  Out of 14 videos presented, three were selected as winners.  The presented videos were individual works or group work.  All videos were published on our Facebook page and the ones with the highest number of likes and with the highest score from the Jury, whose members were representatives from Bank of Albania, Ministry of Education and Sports, Credins Bank and Albanian Association of Banks, were selected as winners.  The winning videos were shown during the opening ceremony where the winners received symbolic gifts and prepaid bank cards (first place - 50,000 lekë; Second Place - 30,000 lekë; Third place - 20,000 lekë).

 

In this competition, graduates of the BSc Banking and Finance degree, were invited to submit an argumentative essay, in electronic form (pdf), in Albanian language, no longer than 1500 words.  A total of 19 essays were submitted from different universities of the country, of which three winners were selected. e three winning students, including a 3 month internship at Union Bank The jury praised their work, taking into account the new mentality, quality of structure and writing and independence of judgment their essay presented.  Union Bank, offered 3 tablets to the three winning students, including a 3 month internship at Union Bank. 

 

This competition was organized in collaboration with the three economic faculties from TBU, Luarasi and Tirana Universities at the premises of Youth Centre of Tirana.  This activity aimed at explaining and understanding banking and its daily operations from a practical perspective. Three teams competed with each other, each acting like bankers and offering to their client (a Hydro Power plant company) the best financial offer for the market.  All students were advised from representatives of AAB, BoA and BKT (the bank that sponsored the activity) about the case study and the characteristics of the competition.  The team of TBU was selected as the winner of the competition.  (85 participants).

 

This play, which was dedicated to elementary school pupils (third and fourth grade), was held at the Experimental National Theatre in Tirana.  It had a dedicated scenography, where 5 actors performed and organized group games.  The play was shown four times for two days in a row and (850 participants).

 

Bank of Albania, in cooperation with the Albanian Association of Banks, organized a visit at Alpha Bank. This bank welcomed the students from “Besnik Sykja” high school, who have elected “Personal Finances in your hands” textbook as an elective in the school curricula.  During this visit, Alpha Bank experts explained to students how a bank works and how they operate their products to their clients (30 participants).

 

"Financial Education through Art" exhibition took place at Fab Gallery,  where 20 children’s paintings, expressing financial concepts, under the under the auspices of the Albanian painter, Mr Kosta Zhongo, were exhibited.  (20 participants).

 

 

125 pupils and high school students visited the Museum of the Bank of Albania, of which 60 students came from "Dora d'Istria" secondary school, 30 students from "Sami Frasheri" high school and 35 students from Agriculture University of Kamza. (125 participants).

 

Junior Achievement of Albania in cooperation with the Albanian Association of Banks, Bank of Albania, with the sponsorship of Alpha Bank, organized the Innovation Camp.  The camp was attended by students of 11th grade of JA network from different cities of Albania. They were grouped into six teams to provide innovative proposals and solutions for the challenge on the theme of "How to enable banks increase clientele, by improving their marketing techniques through the use of mobile technology."  Throughout the challenge, teams were assisted by representatives of the Bank of Albania, Alpha Bank, Societe Generale Bank, Raiffeisen Bank and Tirana Bank.  (30 participants)

 

Mr Gent Sejko, Governor of the Bank of Albania, held an open lecture on the topic: "The role of Bank of Albania in the economy, the combination between the promoter and the regulator" for Master’s students at the European University of Tirana.  The lecture was followed by a question and answer session between the students and the Governor.  (120 participants)

In the framework of Money Week, Intesa San Paolo Bank Albania in cooperation with the Albanian Association of Banks, organized visits for eight high school and one university students in its seven branches in different cities of Albania.   During their visit, Intesa San Paolo Bank Albania experts explained to students how a bank works and how they operate their products to their clients. (30 participants) (250 participants) 

 

At "Alexander Moisiu" University, Ms  Vasilika Kota, Deputy Head of Financial Stability Department at Bank of Albania, delivered a lecture on  "Financial stability and its focus" whereas Ms.  Jola Dima, Head of Risk Management Division, at Intesa SanPaolo Bank Albania, delivered a lecture on "The role of a systemic bank to ensure stability in the financial sector". (90 participants)

"Personal Finance in Your Hands" TV competition took place at the premises of "Ora News" studio among students of  three high schools that have elected "Personal Finance in Your Hands" textbook as an elective, during the 2016-2017 school year.  The participating teams represented "Besnik Sykja" and "Qemal Stafa" high schools in Tirana and "Raqi Qirinxhi" high school in Korça.  The competition aimed at assessing students’ knowledge and skills that they had gained from "Personal Finance in Your Hands" textbook.  "Qemal Stafa" high school team was elected as the winner".  (40 participants). At "Alexander Xhuvani" University, in Elbasan Ms. Elona Dushku, Head of Macroeconomic Research Division and a representative of Tirana bank, introduced the students of Finance-Bank branch,  with the  Institution of the Bank of Albania and the its research work, and the activity of commercial banks to households. (70-80 participants)
