Global Money Week 2019

Global Money Week is a global celebration of money, taking place in March each year, which aims at raising the awareness of the younger generation to be financially responsible and capable adults in the future. Numerous partners around the globe organize diverse activities to educate children financially, and teach them how to: care for money; save; understand the changes in the economic systems they live in; generate income through entrepreneurship; and, lay the foundations for their future.

During this week, the Bank of Albania joins forces with partner institutions and organizes various educational activities targeting children and young people, such as: seminars, lectures, school and television contests, visits to the Museum of the Bank of Albania, commercial banks, as well as open classes.

The Launching Ceremony of the Money Week 2019 was organized at the Museum of the Bank of Albania (BoA). The Deputy Governor of the Bank of Albania, the Chairman of the Albanian Association of Banks (AAB) and the Deputy Minister of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY) in their brief welcoming addresses emphasized, among other things, the Money Week mission, promoting the importance of financial literacy to the general public and especially to the younger generations.

In this ceremony, the Deputy Governor Minxhozi, AAB Chairman Pedrazzi, the Deputy Minister and the CEOs of sponsoring commercial banks awarded prizes to the winners of the three contests that had been launched a month earlier.

This contest targeted sixth graders of nine-year schools (basic compulsory education), who presented creative projects, like drawings and installations, which clearly transmit their concept of money management. Overall, 110 projects were submitted to the contest, realized by 275 pupils from 25 nine-year schools. The best 5 projects were awarded prizes sponsored by BKT.

Overall, 17 meme were submitted by 20 pupils from 10 nine-year schools. The best 5 memes were awarded prizes sponsored by Credins Bank.

The best video contest invited high school students to present their messages on the theme “Too Young to speak in Old Lek!” through a video no longer than 2 minutes. In total, 13 videos were submitted by 24 students from 10 high schools. The best 3 videos were awarded prizes sponsored by ABI Bank.

On the occasion of the Money Week, students of the “Hotel-Tourism” High School visited the Museum of the Bank of Albania. During the museum visit, they were introduced to the numismatic collection, the country's economic and monetary history, and the topic “Too Young to speak in Old Lek!"

On the third day of the Money Week, students from the third grade of the "Don Bosko" nine-year school visited the Museum of Bank of Albania. The children were introduced to the numismatic collection and to the topic “Too Young to speak in Old Lek!". They spent time in the Museum's areas dedicated to the financial education of youth.

On the occasion of the Money Week, on 27 March 2019, experts of the Bank of Albania held a lecture for second and third year students of the Faculty of Economics at “Fan S. Noli” University in Korça.

The lecture started with the presentation of Mr. Eris Sharxhi, Head of Risk Supervision Division, Supervision Department, on the topic: "Background and main developments in the Albanian banking system" and continued with the presentation by Mr. Andi Habilaj, Head of Market and Liquidity Supervision Office, Supervision Department, on "Banking and Supervisory Function of the Bank of Albania".

On the third day of the Money Week, students of the non-public nine-year School "Udha e Shkronjave" visited the Museum of the Bank of Albania. The children were introduced to the numismatic collection and to the topic “Too Young to speak in Old Lek!". They spent time in the Museum's areas dedicated to the financial education of children and youth.

On the occasion of the Money Week, for the second consecutive year, the Albanian Association of Banks and the Bank of Albania organized the European Money Quiz. Some 350 students from 59 secondary schools from all over the country took part in this Kahoot-based online competition.

The winner was the team from “Emin Duraku” school, Tirana. The two-member winning team - Almira Tota and Hana Spahia - will represent Albania in the European final, on the 7 May 2019, in Brussels. 

At the end of the Money Week, on 29 March 2019, at the invitation of the Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Studies with Practice, Dr. Ela Golemi, the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, delivered an open lecture for a wide audience of students at "Aleksander Moisiu" University in Durrës.

The lecture on “The role of the Bank of Albania in the sustainable and log-term development of the country - financial stability an indispensable precondition for economic development” presented an overview of BoA's history as a modern central bank and focused on the functions and duties set out in the law, its main objectives and instruments, as well as on the economic context in which it operates. Attending students took the opportunity to address their questions to the Governor.

On the occasion of the Money Week, at the Bank of Albania's premises, Mr. Perjan Duro presented "Personal Finances: Life of a Financial Application".

As the creator of the MoneyCoach application, Mr Duro introduced the process of creating the application in order to promote innovative ideas with regard to financial education and financial inclusion. This app can be downloaded free of charge from Apple Store and the Play Store to help manage your personal finances. Apple has recently installed MoneyCoach on all new iPhones in any Apple Store in Germany as one of the best iOS platform applications.

On the occasion of the Money Week, experts of the Bank of Albania held a lecture for the second and third year students of the Faculty of Economics at “Luigj Gurakuqi” University, in Shkodra. The lecture began with the presentation of Ms. Juna Bozdo, Head of Systemic Risk Assessment Division, Department of Financial Stability, on "Financial Stability, Bank of Albania's Role in its preservation and the deeuroization process" and continued with Ms. Milena Panajoti, an expert from the Deposit Insurance Agency, on the topic "Deposit Insurance Scheme for Banks and SLAs in our country. The role and functions of the Deposit Insurance Agency".
