Currency issue

The monetary unit in the Republic of Albania is the Albanian "Lek".

The Bank of Albania has the exclusive right to issue national banknotes and coins with legal tender within the Republic of Albania. It defines the shape, size, pattern (configuration) and other features of Albanian legal tender as well as numismatic banknotes and coins.
The Bank of Albania, in accordance with the drafting, the approval and the independent implementation of the monetary policy of the Republic of Albania, as well as the approved monetary program, drafts the strategy for the issuance of legal tender national banknotes and coins , to meet the currency demand of the Albanian economy.

It drafts the policy of withdrawal from circulation of old issue banknotes and coins and their exchange with new issue banknotes and coins. Also, the Bank confiscates and seizes counterfeit banknotes and coins.
